Fad No More: Food Trucks Go Mainstream

Food trucks are here to stay. Once a novel idea that served up delectable street food, the food truck industry has motored into the mainstream and become a sustainable market segment with many advantages over quick-serve and fast-food retailers.

The National Restaurant Association says food trucks currently account for about $650 million in revenue or 1 percent of total U.S. restaurant sales, and that figure is growing. According to Emergent Research, food trucks are expected to generate between 3 and 4 percent of total restaurant revenue – about $2.7 billion – by 2017.

Quality, value and speed are the top three attributes consumers look for in quick-serve or fast-food restaurants, according to the National Restaurant Association. Food trucks often outperform bricks-and-mortar restaurants in all these areas. Unlike the stereotypical “roach coaches” of years gone by, modern food trucks offer delicious cuisine made from high-quality ingredients.

Three gourmet food trucks attracting Southern California food fans are The Hungry Nomad, Hang 10 Tacos and Greenz on Wheelz.

The Hungry Nomad offers an extensive menu of classic California dishes with a hint of the Mediterranean. Choose from fresh salads, sandwiches, pockets and appetizing hummus.

Hang 10 Tacos is the big blue rolling restaurant serving tasty tacos concocted from premium ingredients, including delicious steak, shrimp, BBQ, pork and fish. Vegetarian entries also are available.

Greenz on Wheelz says “Lettuce Serve You.” The green mobile bistro prepares garden-fresh sandwiches, melts, salads and wraps for discriminating diners. Each one is created with care and served with a smile.

These food trucks also are available to cater events ranging from grand openings, cocktail parties and concerts to corporate and sporting events, festivals and fundraisers. The staff of each truck can arrange to rent tables, chairs, lights and heating lamps for an additional charge and can hire bartenders, wait staff and even musicians or a DJ. Have the trucks park and serve at your event site or simply order a “hot drop” of ready-to-serve food to be delivered. Be a guest at your own party. Let a food truck do all the work.
