The innovative food truck industry produces almost every fare available and has launched numerous new cuisines, such as Mexican and Chinese flavor combinations. Now even halal food trucks can be found on the streets of major cities that have large Muslim populations.
Halal is an Arabic word meaning “permitted” or “lawful.” Halal foods follow the Islamic dietary guidelines found in the Qu’ran. Followers are not permitted to consume haram or “forbidden” foods, such as:
- Pork or pork by-products
- Animals not slaughtered properly or not slaughtered in the name of Allah
- Blood and blood by-products
- Carnivorous animals
- Birds of prey
- Land animals that don’t have external ears
Today, halal food attracts a following that goes beyond the traditional Muslin diner. In Washington, D.C., two Halal Grill Food Trucks serve gyros, pitas and shish kabob to a wide range of hungry customers. In New York City, the 49th and 6th Halal Food Truck regularly parks at its namesake intersection across from Rockefeller Center. And Tariq’s #1 Halal Food Cart has garnered a following in New York despite having no Twitter account. The Halal Guys is a popular food truck in Austin, Texas, a city with serious food truck competition. The Guys serve full plates, single wraps and a selection of delectable dips.
In addition, halal foods can be found in many Middle Eastern grocers, and several large cities have halal butchers. Because of the growing demand for Halal foods, some national supermarket chains have offered halal turkeys for Thanksgiving. The Islamic Food and Nutrition Council of America (IFANCA) is a Chicago-based, non-profit Islamic organization that promotes and certifies halal food. IFANCA has representatives in Canada, Europe, China, Malaysia, India, Pakistan and Singapore and approves official halal food products in 50-plus countries.
